The 2020 Democratic National Convention is set to take place in Milwaukee, but the city is facing some challenges as it prepares to host the event. With the coronavirus pandemic still looming large, Democrats have opted to hold their convention virtually, leaving hotels and businesses in Milwaukee feeling the impact.

One bar in Milwaukee, the Mothership, has even decided to close down for the convention, with the owner citing a desire to not be involved in the “tomfoolery” of the event. Meanwhile, some organizations are choosing to host events in nearby Chicago instead, with concerns about the presence of President Trump complicating matters.

The Latino Leaders Network, for example, will be hosting a reception in Milwaukee but is going all out with a blowout event on Navy Pier in Chicago. However, there are worries that major corporations may be hesitant to participate in the convention, as they are also shying away from the Republicans.

In both Milwaukee and Chicago, conversations are ongoing with businesses, but contracts have yet to be signed. The skittishness from corporations may be leading to some of the largest and priciest venues, like the Milwaukee Art Museum, not hosting private parties during the convention.

Overall, the 2020 Democratic National Convention is shaping up to be a unique and challenging event for Milwaukee, as the city navigates the complexities of hosting a major political gathering during a global pandemic.
