Legendary director Martin Scorsese is set to take on a new project that may surprise some of his fans. Scorsese has agreed to spearhead a documentary series about Christian saints for Fox Nation, the subscription streaming service run by Fox News Media.
The series, titled “Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints,” will be hosted, narrated, and executive produced by Scorsese himself. The acclaimed director, known for films like “Taxi Driver” and “The Wolf of Wall Street,” will bring his unique storytelling style to the world of saints.
The series, set to begin airing in November, will dramatize the stories of eight saints, including Joan of Arc, John the Baptist, Mary Magdalene, Francis of Assisi, and Thomas Becket. Along with narrating re-enactments of the saints’ stories, Scorsese will also host on-camera discussions with experts.
In a statement, Scorsese expressed his long-standing fascination with the stories of the saints, saying, “These are stories of eight very different men and women, each of them living through vastly different periods of history and struggling to follow the way of love revealed to them and to us by Jesus’ words in the gospels.”
The series is created by Matti Leshem, directed by Elizabeth Chomko, and written by Kent Jones. It is set to be released in two parts, with four episodes streaming in November and the remaining four episodes coming in May 2025.
Scorsese’s interest in Christianity is not new, as the director has explored religious themes in his previous works. His 1988 film, “The Last Temptation of Christ,” sparked controversy for its depiction of Jesus questioning his divinity. Scorsese has also revealed plans for a new film about Jesus, based on the book “A Life of Jesus” by Shusaku Endo.
With “The Saints,” Scorsese continues to push boundaries and explore complex themes, showcasing his versatility as a filmmaker. The series is sure to spark discussion and intrigue among audiences, as Scorsese delves into the lives of these revered figures in Christian history.
