Martin Hywood, a man with muscular dystrophy, and comedian Jon Richardson have formed an unlikely friendship that has blossomed over their shared love for Leeds United football club. Despite their differences, the duo has come together to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy UK, with an upcoming comedy night scheduled for October 11th at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre.
Hywood, who was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at the age of 23, lost his ability to walk in 2020 and has since become a full-time wheelchair user. Despite the challenges he faces, he remains dedicated to raising awareness and funds for the charity.
Richardson, who describes Hywood as “absolutely remarkable,” has joined forces with his friend to organize the fundraising event, which will feature performances from comedians such as Kojo Amin, Matt Forde, Suzi Ruffell, and Tim Vine.
Speaking about the importance of raising money for muscular dystrophy research, Hywood emphasized the impact the condition has had on his own life and that of his older brother. He hopes to raise £300,000 from the comedy night to support ongoing efforts to find a cure for the genetic disorder.
