Brie Larson, the Oscar-winning actress known for her roles in Room and Lessons in Chemistry, is set to make her UK stage debut in a Greek tragedy next year. The 34-year-old will star in Elektra, an adaptation of Sophocles’ play translated by poet Anne Carson.
Describing the drama as a “timeless story,” Larson expressed her excitement to join the production directed by Daniel Fish. The show will premiere in Brighton in January before transferring to the West End for a three-month run.
Elektra follows the story of a young woman named Elektra who seeks vengeance after her father’s assassination, teaming up with her long-lost brother Orestes. Larson, who last appeared on stage in 2010, is thrilled to explore this classic tale with the West End audience.
The production, produced by Empire Street Productions, will be a collaboration between Larson, Fish, and Carson. Fish, known for his award-winning production of Oklahoma!, expressed his excitement for the challenge of working on Sophocles’ tragedy with Carson’s explosive translation.
