HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series has caused a stir among young actors as the network has officially launched a casting call for the iconic roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. The casting call, which was opened earlier this week, is specifically looking for children between the ages of nine and 11 in April 2025 who are residents of the UK or Ireland.
In a statement to Variety, HBO confirmed the authenticity of the casting call and emphasized their commitment to inclusive and diverse casting. The network is encouraging all qualified performers to apply, regardless of ethnicity, sex, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other basis protected by law.
To apply for the roles, children must submit two self-tapes, including a short poem or story (excluding anything from Harry Potter) and a personal introduction detailing their date of birth, height, and location. The casting call also specifies that children should use their own accents in the audition tapes.
While there is no official release date for the series yet, it is expected to film in the UK during 2025-26. Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, known for their work on Succession, will serve as writer and director, respectively. The series is anticipated to consist of seven seasons, with each season adapting one of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter books.
In a nod to the original film series, which starred Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, Radcliffe has expressed his excitement for the new adaptation but doubts he will make a cameo appearance. “I think they very wisely want a clean break,” Radcliffe told E! News. “And I don’t know if it would work to have us do anything in it. I’m very happy to just watch along with everyone else.”
