Indian rapper Hanumankind has taken the music world by storm with his track “Big Dawgs,” which has not only topped global charts but also briefly outpaced Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us.” In a short span of time, Hanumankind, also known as Sooraj Cherukat, has risen to fame in India’s hip-hop scene, captivating audiences with his unique style and energy.

The music video for “Big Dawgs,” shot inside a maut ka kuan (well of death), showcases Cherukat’s boundless energy as he navigates the pit while stunt drivers zip past him. The collaboration with producer Kalmi Reddy and director Bijoy Shetty has garnered over 132 million streams on Spotify and 83 million views on YouTube since its release in July, propelling Cherukat to global recognition.

Born in Kerala and raised in various countries due to his father’s work, Cherukat found his musical inspiration in Houston, Texas, where he developed his passion for hip-hop. After returning to India in 2021 and pursuing rapping full-time, Cherukat’s music evolved to reflect his diverse experiences and blend his cosmopolitan identity with his Indian roots.

Despite his rapid rise to fame, Cherukat has faced criticism for not conforming to traditional expectations of Indian identity in his music. However, fans appreciate his genre-hopping style and fresh social commentary, viewing him as a street poet who defies categorization.

As Cherukat continues to navigate the complexities of his dual identity and musical career, he remains committed to staying true to his roots while adapting to the ever-changing music landscape. His ability to transcend expectations and establish himself on his own terms is a testament to his integrity and artistry.
