Thousands of protesters gathered near the Democratic National Convention (DNC) on its opening day to call for a ceasefire in Gaza and an end to US support for Israel. While the protest was mostly peaceful, several demonstrators were arrested after breaking through a security fence around the Chicago venue.

Despite hopes for a larger turnout, the number of protesters fell short of expectations. President Joe Biden acknowledged the protesters’ concerns in his convention farewell speech, emphasizing the need for a US-brokered ceasefire in the region.

The protests highlighted divisions within the Democratic Party over US support for Israel’s actions in Gaza. Some demonstrators expressed disappointment in both Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris for their stance on the issue.

Protesters chanted slogans and marched around the DNC site, calling for justice and peace in the Middle East. The rally also featured speeches from activists and independent presidential candidate Cornel West.

The demonstrations are set to continue throughout the convention week. The ongoing conflict in Gaza has sparked international outcry, with thousands of lives lost and many more displaced. The situation remains tense as calls for peace grow louder.
