Ex-Obama advisor warns against overconfidence in Kamala Harris, says Trump may still lead in swing states
Former Obama advisor David Axelrod issued a cautionary note on Sunday, warning against overconfidence in Vice President Kamala Harris and suggesting that former President Trump may still be in the lead in the crucial swing states that will decide the outcome of the election.
Axelrod stated, “This is still a very competitive race. If the election were today, I‘m not sure who would win, and I think it may well be President Trump because it’s an Electoral College fight.”
A recent survey conducted by Ipsos found that Trump and Harris are neck and neck in seven swing states, including Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, and Nevada. Harris currently holds 42% of the vote share in these states, compared to Trump’s 40% and independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy’s 5%.
Axelrod emphasized the importance of not underestimating the competition, noting that for a Democrat to win in battleground states, they must have a significant lead in the Electoral College.
Despite Harris’ strong performance and progress with voters, Axelrod pointed out the need for energetic action to secure victory in the election. He highlighted the importance of turning enthusiasm into tangible results.
The Ipsos poll also revealed that respondents in swing states identified inflation as the most pressing issue facing the country, followed by immigration. These findings underscore the significance of addressing economic concerns in the upcoming election.
The Harris campaign has yet to respond to requests for comment on Axelrod’s remarks.
