Michigan Father of Two Shot and Killed in Confrontation with Neighbor
A quiet residential neighborhood in Canton, Michigan was rocked by tragedy on Saturday when a father of two was shot and killed after a confrontation with his neighbor turned deadly.
The victim, identified as 35-year-old Nathan Morris, an engineer at Ford Motors, was described as a “family man first and foremost” who was active in the community and recently ran for the Canton School Board.
According to reports, the violence unfolded just before noon in the 200 block of Cornell Street. Canton police officers responded to the scene and found Morris with gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
The shooting suspect, 47-year-old Devereaux Christopher Johnson, barricaded himself inside his home before eventually surrendering to police. Johnson has been charged with first-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a weapon.
Michigan RNC Committeewoman Hima Kolanagireddy, who worked closely with Morris in politics, described him as a “gentle soul” who would do no harm and think no harm. She recounted the tragic events leading up to Morris’ death, stating that he was shot and killed while trying to defuse a situation involving his family and the neighbor.
Johnson was arraigned in the 35th District Court and remanded to the Wayne County jail without bond. His next court hearing is scheduled for August 23.
Canton Police Chief Chad Baugh condemned the senseless act of violence and extended his deepest condolences to Morris’ family and neighbors who witnessed the tragic event.
The community is left mourning the loss of a beloved father, neighbor, and community member as they come to terms with the devastating outcome of a seemingly ordinary neighborhood dispute.
