Kamala Harris Stands Firm on Israel Support Despite Heckling at Detroit Rally
Democratic vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris faced pro-Palestinian protestors at a rally in Detroit, where she was heckled over her stance on Israel. Her national security adviser, Phil Gordon, clarified that Harris will not support an arms embargo on Israel, emphasizing her commitment to ensuring Israel’s ability to defend itself against threats from Iran and Iran-backed terrorist groups.
The Uncommitted movement, which has been urging Democrats to boycott the election due to US support for Israel, claimed that Harris had shown openness to discussing an arms embargo. However, Gordon refuted this claim, stating that Harris will continue to prioritize protecting civilians in Gaza and upholding international humanitarian law.
Tensions in the Middle East have been escalating, with Iran threatening to retaliate against Israel following the assassination of Hamas’s political leader in Tehran. The US has increased weapon supplies to Israel in response to recent Hamas attacks, while both Harris and presidential candidate Joe Biden have called for a ceasefire and more humanitarian aid in Gaza.
The Uncommitted movement has been pressuring Harris to halt US military support for Israel since Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed her. The group advocates for an arms embargo and had a chance to voice their concerns to Harris before the rally in Detroit, where they were met with chants of “Kamala, you can’t hide, we won’t vote for genocide” from protestors.
Despite the disruptions, Harris remained steadfast in her message, telling the crowd that “everyone’s voice matters” but also asserting, “If you want Donald Trump to win, then say that. Otherwise, I’m speaking.” Both Harris and Trump have been campaigning in the Midwest this week, vying for support in critical swing states.
Recent polls show Harris leading Trump among likely voters, indicating a significant shift in support since Biden’s endorsement. As the election draws near, Harris’s stance on Israel and her response to protestors will continue to be scrutinized as voters make their decisions.
