Mohammed Sweirky, a technician for Paltel, the largest telecommunications company in Gaza, faced a difficult decision when he prepared to leave for a work trip in January to repair telecommunications infrastructure that had been destroyed in northern Gaza. Despite his family’s pleas for him not to go due to the ongoing fighting between Israeli troops and Hamas members, Sweirky felt compelled to help restore phone services for residents in need.
Since the start of the war, Sweirky’s job has become one of the most dangerous in Gaza, as Israel’s bombing campaign has severely damaged the telecommunications infrastructure in the region. Along with 50 engineers and technicians from Paltel, Sweirky has been working tirelessly to reinstate service in neighborhoods that have been without communication for days or even weeks.
