The Biden administration and U.S. lawmakers are celebrating the arrest of two Sinaloa cartel leaders, Ismael Zambada Garcia and Joaquín Guzmán López, in El Paso, Texas. Zambada Garcia, also known as “El Mayo,” co-founded the notorious cartel with now-jailed drug lord “El Chapo.” Guzmán López surrendered to U.S. authorities and turned on El Mayo, leading to their capture.

The Department of Justice had offered a $15 million reward for El Mayo’s arrest, and he now faces multiple indictments related to drug trafficking and organized crime in the U.S. President Biden praised the arrest as a victory in the fight against illicit fentanyl, which is primarily produced in Mexico and smuggled across the border.

Republican lawmaker Rep. Tony Gonzales called the arrests a “huge win for the world” and praised the law enforcement agencies involved. However, he also cautioned about the potential power vacuum that could result from their capture, leading to more ruthless factions within the cartel.

The capture of these cartel leaders highlights the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and organized crime, with officials emphasizing the need for continued vigilance in addressing the challenges posed by criminal organizations.
