Lawyer says Justin Timberlake was not drunk during DWI arrest

Justin Timberlake’s lawyer has come to his defense, stating that the popstar was “not intoxicated” when he was arrested by police officers last month for driving under the influence. The 43-year-old singer was detained in New York for running a stop sign and failing to stay on the right side of the road.

During his first court hearing, Timberlake’s lawyer, Edward Burke, claimed that police had made “a very significant number of errors” in the case. “The most important fact to know about this case is that Justin was not intoxicated and should not have been arrested for DWI,” Burke stated. He also mentioned that Timberlake “respects law enforcement” and cooperated with the police officers at all times.

Despite the allegations, Timberlake was not present at the hearing as it clashed with the start of his Everything I Thought It Was world tour. He will be re-arraigned virtually in court next month.

The arrest took place in Sag Harbor in the Hamptons, a popular summer destination for celebrities on Long Island. According to a charging document, Timberlake’s eyes were “bloodshot and glassy” and he had a “strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” on his breath. He also reportedly performed poorly on sobriety tests and refused a breathalyzer test.

“I had one martini and I followed my friends home,” Timberlake allegedly told the officer who stopped him. The singer has previously been open about seeking help for excessive drinking.

In New York, penalties for charges related to driving while intoxicated can include up to a year in jail, a $1,000 fine, and the suspension of a driver’s license for at least six months. Timberlake’s lawyer remains confident that the charges against the popstar will be dismissed.
