The actress Amanda Abbington has made shocking revelations about the abuse she and her family have faced after withdrawing from Strictly Come Dancing last year. Abbington claimed that she and her daughter received “rape threats” and her son faced “threats of death” following her decision to leave the show.

In an interview with Channel 4 News, Abbington described the online abuse as “brutal, relentless, and unforgiving,” with dozens of threats coming in daily. She also accused her former professional partner on the show, Giovanni Pernice, of being “unnecessary, abusive, cruel, and mean.” Pernice has denied these accusations, and the BBC stated that they take duty of care extremely seriously.

Abbington revealed that she made a complaint about her experiences on the show, citing bullying and aggressive behavior. She expressed disappointment in the lack of support she received and emphasized the importance of speaking up against toxic and unsafe situations.

The actress called for a change in the industry to create a safe environment for everyone, regardless of gender, to report uncomfortable situations. She also mentioned knowing of three other women who went through similar experiences on Strictly and encouraged others to come forward.

Following Abbington’s claims, BBC director-general Tim Davie issued an apology to contestants who had negative experiences on the show. The BBC spokesperson emphasized the importance of confidentiality and fair process in handling complaints and stated that they take all issues seriously.

Giovanni Pernice, who has since left the show, has denied the allegations against him and remains confident in clearing his name. The BBC announced additional steps to strengthen welfare and support on Strictly Come Dancing in response to these allegations.

Abbington’s brave decision to speak out against the abuse she faced sheds light on the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment in the entertainment industry. Her story serves as a reminder of the need to address issues of bullying and harassment in the workplace.
