The Republican National Convention in Milwaukee kicked off with a bang as former President Donald Trump made a triumphant return to the public eye just two days after surviving an assassination attempt. With a bandage over one ear, Trump entered the convention arena to the cheers of thousands of supporters chanting “U S A! We love Trump!”

The atmosphere was electric as Trump greeted key political allies and family members, including three of his children, but notably absent was his wife Melania. The crowd pumped their fists and chanted “Fight! Fight! Fight!” in solidarity with Trump after the harrowing incident in Pennsylvania.

Trump, who did not make a speech, appeared moved by the outpouring of support from the crowd. He listened to speeches alongside his newly announced running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, and was visibly emotional at times, bowing his head in prayer and mouthing “Thank you, everybody.”

The eventful first day of the convention also saw Trump being formally nominated as the Republican presidential candidate, following a federal judge’s dismissal of criminal charges against him for mishandling classified documents. The victory for Trump added to the political momentum he is currently riding, with the Democratic Party questioning Joe Biden’s candidacy following a poor debate performance.

In a surprising move, Trump waited until the convention to announce JD Vance as his vice-presidential pick, causing a stir among delegates. While some praised the choice, Democrats indicated they would target Vance’s anti-abortion views and connections to big tech in their campaign against him.

Despite the economic theme of the convention being overshadowed by the rally attack, speakers highlighted issues such as inflation, violent crime, and drug epidemics as reasons to support Trump. Delegates, still reeling from the assassination attempt, expressed their relief and gratitude for Trump’s survival, with South Carolina Senator Tim Scott declaring, “If you didn’t believe in miracles before Saturday, you better be believing right now.”

As Trump prepares for his closing night convention speech on Thursday, the political landscape remains tense as both parties gear up for the November election. Trump’s resilience in the face of adversity has energized his supporters and set the stage for a fierce battle for the presidency.
