Copenhagen’s Tourist Board Offers Free Food and Activities in Exchange for Eco-Friendly Tasks
Tourists visiting Copenhagen will now have the opportunity to earn free food and activities by participating in environmentally friendly tasks, thanks to a new initiative launched by the city’s tourist board.
Starting on July 15th, visitors to the Danish capital can earn rewards for activities such as litter-picking, using public transport, or biking around the city. In return for their efforts, tourists can claim free lunches, coffees, glasses of wine, and even kayak rentals.
The “CopenPay” scheme aims to offset the environmental impact of tourism, encouraging visitors to act more sustainably during their stay. Rikke Holm Petersen, the tourist board’s communications chief, explains, “When you travel abroad, you pollute. One of the things we can change is getting people to act more sustainably at the destination.”
The project is trust-based, with attractions not requiring proof of completed tasks. So far, 24 organizations, including museums, rooftop bars, and kayaking charities, have signed up for the pilot program.
While the government is not reimbursing participating companies, the hope is that the initiative will encourage a greener mindset among visitors. Ms. Petersen envisions a future where tourists take home a “souvenir” of sustainability.
As the trial runs until August 11th, the success of the scheme will determine its future rollout. With the potential to make a positive impact on both the environment and visitors’ mindsets, Copenhagen’s eco-friendly tourism initiative is a step towards a greener future.
