The Lion King star Jason Weaver reflects on his iconic role and newfound recognition
Jason Weaver, known for his role as the young singing voice of Simba in Disney’s classic film “The Lion King,” has been steadily working in film and TV over the years. However, it wasn’t until recently that he began to receive more recognition for his role in the beloved animated movie.
Weaver went on to co-star in the sitcom “Smart Guy” and even lent his vocals to Chingy’s hit song “One Call Away.” But it was his role in “The Lion King” that truly resonated with audiences.
Disney is keeping the fanfare around the film alive with an anniversary concert featuring Weaver and other original voice actors, set to stream on Disney+. The studio has also announced a theatrical rerelease of the original film in July, as well as a new live-action prequel titled “Mufasa: The Lion King” premiering in December.
Speaking from Chicago, where he is currently filming the Showtime drama “The Chi,” Weaver expressed his newfound appreciation for his part in the Disney classic. He recalled how the opportunity to sing for young Simba came about during the filming of “The Jacksons” mini-series, where Elton John noticed his talent and recommended him for the role.
The recording process for the film was a memorable experience for Weaver, as he was able to see his actions potentially influence the character’s animation. He impressed the directors and producers with his rendition of “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” and ultimately landed the role after just a few takes.
Weaver also recorded other songs for the film, including “Hakuna Matata” and “Warthog Rhapsody,” although the latter did not make it into the final cut.
As he continues to work on various projects, Weaver’s role in “The Lion King” remains a highlight in his career, and he is grateful for the recognition and opportunities it has brought him.
