1Xtra DJ uncovers that his grandad was a victim

1Xtra DJ Kaylee Golding has shared a heartbreaking story about her grandad being a victim of the infected blood scandal that rocked the UK in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. Kaylee’s grandad, Graham, was infected with hepatitis B and hepatitis C during treatment for his haemophilia, ultimately leading to his death when Kaylee was just 17 years old.

The public inquiry report released on Monday revealed the extent of the failure and denial that resulted in thousands of patients being affected by contaminated blood. More than 30,000 people were infected with diseases like HIV and hepatitis C, with almost 3,000 deaths reported.

Kaylee expressed her gratitude for finally receiving some closure and acknowledgment for the victims of the scandal. She emphasized the importance of addressing the stigma surrounding hepatitis and HIV, which had kept her grandad’s condition a secret for many years.

The inquiry report concluded that the infections were not accidental, highlighting the negligence of doctors, blood services, and governments in prioritizing patient safety. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has issued an apology for the scandal and promised compensation for the victims.

For Kaylee, the most important thing is finding closure and remembering her grandad fondly. Despite the tragedy, she cherishes the time she had with him and the memories they shared. The infected blood scandal may have taken her grandad, but Kaylee is grateful for the opportunity to grow up with him by her side.
