House Passes Bill to Deport Illegal Immigrants Who Assault Police Officers
In a decisive vote on Wednesday evening, the House of Representatives approved a bill aimed at deporting illegal immigrants who assault police officers. The bill, titled the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act, passed with a vote of 265 to 148, with 54 Democrats crossing party lines to support the legislation.
Led by Rep. Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey, the bill requires undocumented migrants to be detained by federal authorities until they can be deported. It also establishes a new category for migrant inadmissibility specifically targeting those accused of assaulting law enforcement officers.
The passage of this bill comes as part of national Police Week, with House Republican leaders pushing for a series of legislation to support law enforcement. However, a significant number of House Democrats, led by Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, opposed the bill.
The issue of migrants attacking police officers has gained national attention in recent months, with incidents such as a violent brawl in Times Square involving New York City police officers and migrants, as well as the tragic death of a Washington State Patrol Trooper at the hands of an undocumented immigrant.
Majority Whip Tom Emmer criticized House Democrats for prioritizing the rights of violent illegal immigrants over the safety of law enforcement officers, calling the party the most anti-law enforcement in history.
As the debate over immigration and law enforcement continues, the bill now moves to the Senate for further consideration. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
