The southern border of the United States continues to see a surge in illegal crossings, with over 3,500 Chinese nationals encountered in May alone, along with hundreds of individuals from Jordan, Turkey, and Mauritania. According to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sources speaking to Fox News, the San Diego Sector has become a hotspot for these illegal crossings, with the vast majority of encounters taking place there.

While the Tucson Sector in Arizona saw the most encounters overall, San Diego was a close second with over 32,000 illegal crossings. In May, over 770 Jordanians, more than 670 Turkish, and over 500 Mauritanian nationals were recorded crossing illegally in the San Diego sector, highlighting the global nature of the U.S. migrant crisis.

The number of Chinese nationals crossing the border has seen a significant increase in recent years, with over 24,200 encounters so far this fiscal year. Additionally, over 118,000 migrants were apprehended by Border Patrol in May, including over 6,300 “special interest aliens” from countries of potential national security concern.

The ongoing crisis at the border has become a major political issue, with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas acknowledging that some migrants try to exploit the U.S. asylum system. The administration has called for reform from Congress, including a bipartisan Senate bill, but has faced challenges in gaining support for these measures.

Republicans have criticized the administration’s policies, including the rollback of Trump-era measures like wall construction and the Migrant Protection Protocols. They have passed legislation in the House to address these issues, but the Senate has yet to take up the bill.

As the border crisis continues to unfold, it remains a key issue heading into the November presidential election. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
